What is perineal and pelvic rehabilitation?

Perineal and pelvic rehabilitation is an expertise in the field of physiotherapy with a global approach based on the pelvic floor musculature, but also on all the muscles attached to the pelvis. The main objective of this rehabilitation is to regain internal and external muscular balance, as well as good body mechanics to maximize the function of the pelvic floor and optimize the pelvic region. 

What is the function of the pelvic floor?

The pelvic floor is a muscle group located at the base of the pelvis that allows:

  • Closing the orifices to retain urine, gas and stool,

Who is perineal and pelvic rehabilitation for? 

Pelvic-perineal physiotherapy is aimed at both women and men who have: 

  • Urinary, gas or fecal incontinence,
  • Urinary urgency or an overactive bladder,
  • A feeling of heaviness in the lower abdomen or pelvic area,
  • An organ prolapse, 
  • A prolapse requiring the installation and adjustment of a pessary (by medical prescription),
  • If you have tailbone pain,
  • For pregnancy monitoring or in preparation for childbirth,

  • For optimal recovery of your pelvic floor and abdominals after childbirth, as well as a safe return to sports,

What does a perineal and pelvic rehabilitation session consist of?

  • In the first session, a specific assessment of your condition (external and internal examination if necessary),

  • A personalized exercise program,

  • If necessary, certain tools can be used in treatment.
